Rotary Kilns: Tailored for High-Purity Zinc Oxide in EV Battery Production

    The global EV boom has created a surge in demand for high-purity zinc oxide (99.95%+), a key component in battery separators. Traditional rotary kilns, designed for industrial-grade zinc oxide (99.5%), struggle to meet this precision—until recently. Newly engineered rotary kilns with “double oxidation zones” are now the standard for EV battery material production, enabling tighter control over impurities.

    The breakthrough lies in the kiln’s design: a primary zone (1,200°C) where zinc concentrate oxidizes, followed by a secondary zone (1,000°C) where residual impurities (like lead and cadmium) are vaporized and captured by a specialized filter. A South Korean battery material firm uses three such kilns to produce 500 tons of 99.97% pure zinc oxide monthly. This material sells for $3,200/ton—double the price of industrial-grade zinc oxide—because it meets the strict heavy-metal limits (less than 5ppm) for EV batteries.

    For recycled zinc feedstock (e.g., from old EV batteries), the kiln includes a pre-treatment chamber that removes plastic and aluminum before oxidation. A German recycling plant processes 100 tons of EV battery scrap weekly in these kilns, recovering 90% of the zinc as high-purity oxide. This closed-loop system reduces reliance on mined zinc, aligning with EU sustainability regulations.

    Key technical features: ceramic liners that prevent metal leaching, and real-time mass spectrometry to monitor purity. As EV production doubles by 2030, these specialized kilns will be critical to scaling battery material supply.
